King Julian's Adventures
This game was developed during a three days university project . We developed a 2D platformer game with Godot inspired by our team member Julian, who is known for wearing amusing hats. In the game, the player's task is to utilize hats that grant special powers when worn. One of the hats is a cowboy hat, which gives Julian the ability to shoot enemies with a revolver. Another hat is a helmet with wings, enabling Julian to perform a double jump. Additionally, players can collect coins throughout the game, which are used to unlock doors once enough coins have been gathered.
The player starts with three lives. Enemies in the game can cause the player to lose a life upon collision. These enemies can be defeated using the revolver provided by the cowboy hat. If the player runs out of lives, a game-over screen appears that can be changed to the initial start-screen by pressing ENTER or SPACE. If the player falls into a pit, he's automatically game-over, so make sure not to fall!
The game features an introductory sequence and sound effects to enhance the gaming experience. Players can control the character using both the arrow keys and the "WASD" keys for movement, while the spacebar is used for jumping.
The key features of the game are:
- Three levels, each with unique starting conditions:
- Level 1: No hat, standard abilities (walking and jumping).
- Level 2: Starts with the cowboy hat, granting shooting abilities.
- Level 3: Starts with the winged helmet, granting double jump abilities but no shooting.
- Collectible coins that unlock doors after reaching a certain amount.
- The player has three lives, with enemies that reduce a life upon collision and can be eliminated with the revolver.
- An introductory sequence and immersive sound effects.
- Controls:
- Arrow keys and "WASD" keys for movement.
- Spacebar for jumping.
- Z or Y for shooting.
- Gamepads are also supported.
Authors and acknowledgment
We want to express our sincere gratitude to all the members of our group for their invaluable contributions to this project. While we may have had our moments of tension, we couldn't have made it through without each other. Even if we never team up again, we'll always look back on this adventure with fondness.
We also want to give a big shoutout to the wealth of tutorials on YouTube that served as our guiding lights in the dark maze of game development. And let's not forget the treasure trove of free assets and templates that we shamelessly borrowed from OpenGameArt and itch.io. You guys rock!
